Cover Letter for Compassionate Release Support Request

Dear <Type Elected Official Name Here>,

We are writing to ask for your urgent support for parole and compassionate release for Dr. Mutulu Shakur, currently imprisoned in the U.S. Bureau of Prisons. We have enclosed a document with information about Dr. Shakur, and a sample letter of support.

Dr. Shakur has been diagnosed with advanced bone marrow cancer, caused by multiple myeloma. He is suffering from extensive painful bone lesions, caused by the growth of the bone marrow cancer in parts of his spine, ribs and pelvis. The cancer has also expanded into his lung from his 7th rib. The cancer has already grown considerably since tests were first recommended nine months ago.

During the period between his October diagnosis and mid-December, Dr. Shakur was transferred to an undisclosed facility and kept in a cell, shackled to his bed continuously for over two months. He received chemotherapy treatments under those conditions. He was given no access to his family or friends. He had no access to phone calls or email or visits with the exception of two hours of legal visits, again while chained and shackled to the bed. In mid-December he was transferred to the Federal Medical Facility in Lexington Kentucky, where he is currently continuing treatment.

We are asking for your support. Dr. Shakur’s chances of survival will be infinitely improved if he is granted compassionate release, the opportunity for standard of care treatment, bone marrow transplant and access to clinical trials if necessary, and the chance to spend time with his family.

We would appreciate your immediate attention to this request. We’ve included a sample letter, but please feel free to write anything you feel is relevant.

Please address your support letter generally, To Whom It May Concern. This will enable Dr. Shakur’s support team to utilize the letter in court as well as with the U.S. Parole Commission.

Please send a copy of your letter to Mutulu’s attorney:
