2001: Acupuncturist – Beverly Hutchinson

At the end of the 1980’s, out of the Peoples Alternative Health Center providing low cost fasting, acupuncture, massage, meditation, and herbs, began the First World Women of Color Healing Circle founded by Esperanza Martell, Urayoana Trinidad, Marta Morales, and Beverly Hutchinson. The Healing Circle targeted community organizers to train them in the areas of natural healing and emotional release. The mission was that they would in turn take the information and heal their communities. The Healing Circle utilized ancient healing techniques to work with community organizers who were in deep emotional and physical pain and burning out fast while trying to do grassroots work. Serving hundreds of women in all areas of work (teachers, social workers, organizers, health care workers etc.) the Healing Circle was successful in providing an alternative for emotional healing and helping realize many women’s dreams. 2000: Dr. Walter Bosque and Dr. Kokayi Patterson

Walter Bosque

Dr. Walter Bosque

In the 1960’s, young people began to seriously organize their communities in response to the oppressive conditions in education, housing, health and the general deterioration of our communities nationwide. In New York, the Young Lords party and the Black Panther Party started attacking the problem by organizing garbage protests, freedom schools, and health care actions. As a coalition they began Health Revolutionary Action Movement (HRAM), which organized against lead poisoning, took over Lincoln Hospital and the Department of Health Immunization Van to do community TB testing and began to develop grassroots community health care programs and models.  Among the participants was Drs. Walter Bosque, Mutulu Shakur and Urayoana Trinidad who founded the Lincoln Detox Acupuncture Clinic. [Read Dr. Shakur’s statement honoring Dr. Bosque.]

Dr. Kokayi Patterson is the founder of the African Wholistic Health Association.  Prior to his becoming an Acupuncture Specialist in Detox in 1979 Kokayi Patterson was a Drug Counselor and Program Manger/Director specializing in Residential Treatment, Community Outreach, Youth Counseling for 35 years, where he first witnessed acupuncture being used in 1970 at a local Drug Center. He assisted in the development of a Wholistic Approach to Residential Treatment, which included exercise, meditation, quality water, partial vegetarian diet, herbs, vitamins, AcuDetox, massage etc. [Read Dr. Shakur’s statement honoring Dr. Kokayi.]

Statement for Crew Love V: Behind Enemy Lines (April 2009)

mumiaOur Brother Mumia Abu-Jamal, one of the most notable freedom fighters our struggle has produced, has lost his most important legal battle in the Supreme Court of the United States.

Mumia, with the shear strength of character, has mobilized one of the strongest International campaigns in 40 years.  He has not failed to endear himself to dare I say millions of people nationally and internationally.

Its important to realize that the effort to save him from execution was victorious – a victory that should not be taken lightly.  His work to revisit the death penalty has impacted the death penalty in many states to abolish it.

Now what?  What about all the many political prisoners who had no support, who’ve been in prison in the United States for some more than 40 years?  Great minds, great humans, great service to their people with hearts full of courage and humanity.

What are we going to do in an Obama era to finally get some respect and liberty for the many political prisoners and exiles who fell to make this period possible?

Among other tactics, its time for the mass base of Black people to develop a Legislative Lobby on the Local, State and National Legislative body to confront representatives of our community to formulate a process to identify and set into motion the freeing of our political prisoners.

It is said in the Bible, in the Book of Leviticus, that every 50 years prisoners should be freed and all debts forgiven.  Clearly, these are not biblical times, but these are times where a new generation (Hip Hop Generation) has invested in electoral politics.  Sure we can ask you all to use the power that comes with electing folks to now finally, like the Puerto Ricans, Arabs, Jews, and Cubans, mobilize in this period to advance a process to pursue objective standards for freeing captives as the result of political repression.

This process will take hard work on the political, legal and community front, and don’t forget money.  Fortunately, we have various examples in the International theater to draw upon for objective standards of law as precedents to guide us with the application and principles required to achieve our goal.

The Truth and Reconciliation of the COINTELPRO war against the Black Liberation Movement is the background and process to free our political prisoners.

Interview with NuAfrikan Queen and Empress Yetzion on Repatriation (April 2009)

Posted on the Assata Shakur forum

NuAfrikan Queen, TX writes: I am in search of a solution to our problems. At first, I figured we needed to master the art of capital to survive in a capitalistic society. I went out, registered a corporate name and attempted to get in the real estate game with an ultimate goal of creating subdivisions with an Afrikan village concept (hence the reason I am in school for architectural drafting with a minor in civil). I had a plan to pay the mortgage using section 8 voucher. The subdivisions were to be planned with Black nationalist strategically placed within to influence the deaf and blind. I just gave up on all that a week ago. I am Pan-Afrikanist; I believe we are better off going back but how can we leave our brothers, especially those in prison. There should be one organization that represents all Afrikans living in amerikkka, perhaps the RNA, and that organization should be negotiating land grants for us. I believe many of us would go back if we could. plus, the only way to get our brothers out is to first organize and we cant do that here. I dream of a day when we have organized our own transport from here to Afrika with communities set up to welcome our brothers and sisters home. I ask my people all the time would they go to Afrika to live if someone offered them 10 acres there. The response is mostly yes. Many of our people are on the run and living miserable, waiting around for our leaders to save us.

Empress Yetzion, London writes: I know sending responses are difficult but please please can you meditate and give us some guidance on the issue NuAfrikanQueen is reasoning when you have the chance? Fear is a big issue and what she brought up about Repatriation but not wanting to leave our brothers and sisters i.e. in prisons, reservations and concentration camps, is a concern I also feel at times. Also there are so many Black, Brown and Red brothers and sisters in the whole western hemisphere like Latin America and the Caribbean that will probably not want to immigrate to the continent and frankly I don’t think its fair they should feel the need to, just to have equal rights and justice just for being poor, disadvantaged, Non White 2nd class citizens. The caucasoid race and the culture they spread like a cancer is in fact a very small percentage on this planet. Hence I guess the perpetration of caucasoid supremacy and fear of annihilation by Afrikan Unity. My question Dear Elder is since we are a good-hearted race what can we do? Most Whites are ignorant even when they try to understand Afrikan consciousness. Do we continue the “turn the other cheek” philosophy to our own detriment? Do we just abandon our Red brethren already on the verge of extinction or help them fight for their heritage and stolen lands to be returned? Even if we were to separate ourselves from our oppressors they would most probably get on their war ships and try to pursue us down like a modern day runaway slave hunt! They reject our spirituality and the basis of our educational fundaments and in turn brainwash us to believe we know nothing and without embracing Western ideologies we are ignorant (Obama is a good example). It looks like the domination of the Khemet civilisation by the savage Greeks coming back to haunt us once again.

Tolerance seems to not be getting us to our goals for liberation at all, what as a warrior would you suggest we do? My apologies for all the questions but I’m burning to learn and fight. Blessings to you and I hope the ancestors keep you well until we can free you. Haile I

Asante sana for such thoughtful questions, Sistas!

Response to Questions (1) and (2) they interrelate —

I believe we must redefine certain terms and positions in this 2.10 period in the face of the very real structural transformation of our People and their natural resources. Now there exists a new paradigm that requires critical thinking and analysis.

Historically the domestic land question as a part of reparations or a part of the question of New Afrikan independence or self reliance has been a bedrock of Black Nationalism. The Nation of Islam, C.O.R.E. as well as the Yoruba Temple were very much in vogue with this, although rarely reported there exists great thesis and documentation memorializing that struggle, which is instructive upon review.

I do think the TX questioner should stay the course she put herself into play for a foundation for future manipulation of available access to a process that can be a part of an experimental option.

I believe if she’d use the “environment” as a synonymous physical and mental process, there are real opportunities to acquire the physical space to address the mental transformation. The U.S. Internal Stimulus by the direction of this President Obama will open creative resources and ideas that “transform” depressed communities. Use it .. Section 8 or whatever. I believe there is a sister in the South Bronx who’s planting trees and building co-ops that are “environmentally friendly” – with sweat equity — all the components of New Communities. That establishes a fish bowl, that allows others to see the principles and values manifest of the Pan “Africanist,” to say nothing of the learning curve.

Brother Pete O’Neal, living in Tanzania, can give concrete examples of the needs and pitfalls of the “returner,” who also happens to be one of our political freedom fighters in exile.

As in the “State of the Black Nation” and the Urban League Status of Blacks in America, the search for solutions should be an open debate perhaps called Defining or Redefining Pan-Africanism.

Question II

Objective — We must clearly identify those nations, organizations, ideology, economic and military structures that formulates the infrastructure that will dictate Africa’s future, by the control of various means of economic, cultural, and military development, particularly with the IMF gaining more power over the development of countries, and what political direction will come with it.

As a point to start, from the diaspora, all ‘Pan’ Africans must re-engage their present resident nation state’s political apparatus to influence legislatively the purse string and demands of foreign aid to Africa, as a matter of principle. Bilaterally — direct involvement with the nation state N.G.O. civil organization functioning for change or influence of the progress of the people of Africa.

The silence or the failure of a collective response to the murder and human crisis that exists from the hands of African upon African is unforgivable, particularly in the world wide crisis which offers opportunity for the continent.

Redefining —

1. Pan Afrikanism: That as Africans we must help define the future not only on the continent, but African people wherever they exist. Similarly, but distinctively different, than the Zionist of the state of Israel.

1a. Land. Which means “the land.” We can not only personalize the question of land as it relates to a small plot, as important as that may be. But as to the land of the whole of Africa which means the question of the external reliance on the natural resources and the world wide race to push for land and mineral rights by multi-nationals and governments themselves, such as Sarkozy of France in Uganda during the present economic crisis. The “Non” Pan Africanist that leads many of the African states and even well meaning pragmatists believe the terms of the IMF should be adhered to as a prerequisite, without a “Pan African” agenda and principle recognizable to all Pan Africanists. A body of principles and values must be demanded concerning key questions of self reliance, self determination, and cultural innovation.

2. Military. Africom is one of the clearest organizations that presents the challenges which confront the lack of the African collective Pan Africanism. How does and when does a military capability serve the goals of Pan Africanism. How does the African Union transmit to the Diaspora the new 2.10. Objective use is part of developing a future for our people. This understanding of the use of a military input re-establishes a new image of our people on the home land, and forecasts to everyone’s venture the level of determination of our self reliance and principles.

3. Political Prisoners. Freedom for political prisoners, although quite a personal level of sacrifice, illustrates the lack of a strategy of Pan Africanists that’s taken part over 30 years of historical sacrifice. While, i might add, political prisoners in Africa gain national mass support, this is one of the key tools for Pan African awakening that has not taken hold to the Freedom Fighters that languish in U.S. prisons dying of maltreatment and emotional neglect. There is a loud absence of the historical analysis in the education of our children — there exists no early, middle and high school development of our children. The failure in the current mainstream political debate — The amount of fear of losing political capital in conventional electoral politics, demonstrated by Bill Ayers, which means in the national debate of the “State of the Race” forum, or the Urban League Report on the Black Race, that the statistics of disparities of New Africans are raised but never ever the mention of the status of political prisoners of the Black Liberation struggle. So therefore there is never a process which opens up the historical analysis, debate and apparatus, that allows for a more distinct mechanism which puts the action of our freedom fighters into context pre the 2001 re-defining of resistance fighter to terrorist.

We have not joined in the debate of torture and status in terms of International law, be it by way of a Truth and Reconciliation Hearing that we as the people and our “leaders” applauded or another.

“The people should select someone as their ‘Watchman’ who will see ‘the sword coming against the land’ and ‘blow the trumpet to warn the people.’

If the watchman sees the sword coming and does not blow the trumpet to warn the people and the sword comes and take the life of one of them —

God will hold the Watchman accountable for their blood.” Ezekiel 33:1-6.

A Nation neglects no man more shamefully then their freedom fighters of their wars.

Like the Jewish Lobby that uses the domestic political legislative process to protect the interest of the Jewish state and people all over the world, without apologies — How will we use the new political landscape to shape a world view or position — We first have to obtain one for “Pan Africanism.”

Aim High and go all out.

The New African Policy Initiative Lobby Proposal: Urgent Actions & Foreign Policy Objectives to Prevent Africom from Becoming a 21st Century Imperialist Tactic During the Tenure of President Barack Obama (January 2009)

The New African Policy Initiative Lobby Proposal: A Working Paper for Urgent Actions and Foreign Policy Objectives to Prevent Africom from Becoming a 21st Century Imperialist Tactic During the Tenure of U.S. President Barack Obama

by Dr. Mutulu Shakur – 1/30/2009

Africom-out-of-AfricaThe establishment of Africom command by the Bush Administration has Imperialist objective which has been openly rejected by most African State can not be allowed to evolve under the Obama administration.

The urgency for our activist group to be proactive cannot be overstated. Particularly in this period of overlapping transitional stage into the Barack Obama Administration.

A racist vindictive retaliatory agenda is being waged in the congressional House of Representatives and in the Senate by the Republican Party (Although not exclusively), To manipulate and influence intervention and economic military strategy to re-determine various outcome of states of African Nations under Africom’s mission.

Congressmen from Districts with little to no Black/New African constituency have been placed in the National Intelligence Assessment Committee with oversight subcommittee over covert operation in Africa as a part of Africom’s mission.

Their objective reflected by these questions is a white backlash, by developing justification for covert operation internationally so as to interject into the internal affairs of African states setting the stage for US imperialism of the 21st century Africa during the Obama presidency, testing, juxtaposing Obama United States interest irrespective of the African crisis.

It goes without saying that African leadership leaves a lot to be desired. That does not exonerate us from our obligation to distinguish US foreign policy under Barack Obama Era. The world economic forum in Desvo Switzerland was telling, requiring a critical analysis of the African leadership on the world stage. What was also revealing is that all of the western nations have a Zimbabwe fetish – why? Particularly in light of the many challenges and internal conflicts that African states experience trying to fit the western democracy, Zimbabwe represents a crucial question as to rectifying for years of racial apartheid on the key issue of land distribution. A commitment made by the United States and Britain as a imperative element for peaceful transition that has as a promise after all these years since 1980 yet to be fulfilled.

Now to confront a policy initiative in light of the existing background in not only unique to Zimbabwe in the Horn of Africa. The lesson presented in the government of South African model titled, “The Black Economic Development Point System” while it address some of the principle in question at the business level post liberation expectation the land distribution is a mess.

The New African Policy initiative lobby (NAPIL) must resolve to change policy issue of America and it allies who drag their feet, prolonging the post-apartheid solution designed to evolve the quality of life after years of human rights violations. The failure has made the question of land ownership in southern Africa an issue for the black electorate and human right advocates. The many issues that should trigger our moral obligations such as human rights, rape of women, disaster relief, infrastructure development, perpetual war, agricultural underdevelopment all of the above that can undermine the present potential in Africa’s renaissance. Surely while the world is suffering from an economic meltdown, opportunities are created for underdeveloped nations to be apart of the global restructuring on Africa. We must not relinquish our responsibility to monitor and check for any hidden agenda in the United States by racist operative working in the United States house of representative and senate to undermine its possibility. The responsibilities of monitoring the US policies responding to that are not only particular to the African continent but the African Diaspora worldwide is a daunting task. The history of the Atlantic slave trade and western imperialism and colonialism support a prevailing thinking that still exist today; that the lives and conditions of Africans on the continent and of the Diaspora are not as valuable as western Europeans and should not expect human dignity with 33 million Africans living outside of Africa along with the Diaspora.

It’s past time for a change in the paradigm.

Operational Objective N.A.P.I.L. is the development of activist committees through the process of critical thinking, establishing the research preparation, exposure and monitoring focus groups to prevent congressional operatives from moving an agenda on Africom without our input, that conflict with our develop interest.

With 53 nations on the continent even if Sudan and Somalia are apart of the Arab League Africans and the Black Electorate have to take some responsibility. The plan in development to build a African standby force to create a permanent peacekeeping force for Africa which could be deployed on emergency basis will act as a stabilizer in time of conflict by the African Union is the indicator that Africa is moving in the right direction and opens the door for foreign inclusion all have been including South America particularly Brazil. The NAPIL must see how strong policy push in the legislature can hold this Pan African priority.

The Congressional Black Caucus as an apparatus must be requested to provide to our researcher the government policy of Africom for review. It should also be recommended that the CBC call for public review of any policy and allows for transparent interaction and discussion where recommendations of policy of African standby force development is enhanced, paralleling Africom’s intention and that works out and is consistent with the African Union Objective.

The establishment of an Africom open policy focus group must make contact with the various African nation states and sub groups operating on the continent as well as all the NGO relief groups where we formulate a foreign affair agenda to Africom. We must not let an justification or debate on any economic sanctions or military intervention on war crimes until national or international standard of what qualified as war crime which is not unilateral and the addition of CBC representative of said advocacy in the house and gain some voice for debate in the senate were there exist no Black representative of our views on policy position that reject intervention.

Our policy research group should obtain from the state department under the Obama administration their policy on African states in general and Africom mission in particular.

The African union delegation at the united nation can provide some understanding of Africom mission ambassador Susan Rice United State UN representative has a moral obligation for dialogue in light of her position during the Clinton administration that refuse to intervene in the Rwanda genocide. One example confounding many African Diplomats in Southern Africa is ambassador Susan Rice’s position taken on the Kenyan crisis power sharing with all the many lives lost by violence. Dr. Rice has encouraged through the American ambassador for Prime Minister Morgan Tsvangirai to reject the negotiations for power sharing so that the issue of Zimbabwe’s future would be referred to the United Nation’s Security Council. Where U.S., Britain and Canada all have veto power, as opposed to allowing the region to solve their issues through S.A.D.C.

Southern African Democratic Country. Knowing full well sanctions, the western nations first reaction in Zimbabwe, which will have a negative effect on the entire region. Telling, the unfortunate accident of Susan Tsvangirai the wife of organ Tsvangirai right after the agreement had been reached at the dismay of the west. Became an issue raised by the west to cause suspicion of foul play toward ZANUPF and President Robert Mugabe. While in fact the footprint of MI6 and the CIA is more evident. Only an international investigation will determine. In any event the misinformation by the West backfired and exposed the real intent of the West of intervention and it consolidate the agreement of the Zimbabwe people and their party NAPIL must make some sense of the right issue to make the African electorate in the united states more informed. The blame falls on our own lack of oversight and political use of our international obligation assets. We lack the power to apply pressure where and when Clinton was the “black president” and had no pressure to respond to black Pan African issues. The real “change we can believe in” is the change to impact on justice and human suffering everywhere but in particular in our home land similar to when the Jewish citizen impact on Israel.

South Africa’s land reform effort post 1994 election is still a ticking bomb. There has been only a 5% white owned land transferred to the Black majority, still leaving 80% of the land owned by whites.

A million people have been illegally evicted by land owners in rural south Africa since 1994 at a time of global food crisis, South Africa has become a net importer of food after decades of being a net exporter of food with the owner slowing production and reinvesting not in South Africa but in places like Australia.

The consequences of land reform failure is growing protest and violence, 10,000 rallies between 2005-2007 for lack of housing as well as xenophobia rallies of violence against Africans of region states in South Africa. If in June 2013, 100 years from the implementation of the “native land act” of 1913 where 87% of the land became the sole property of white after the then legal forces removal of the thousands of African Families and there is no solution critical of Robert Mugabe attempt to address the problem or not if he survives. He will become the hero of the Southern African region for at least trying to right the wrong of the land question. Are we willing to stand by for sanctions of South Africa for the failure of the West to live up to agreements to resolve the land question.

Malcolm X “ If you are not careful the news will have you hating people who are opposed and loving the people who are doing the oppressing.

It should be a no-brainer that the CBC enlist the majority whip James Claybourn and Rep. Donald Payne, to appoint a freshman member for that matter any representative that is in line with the perspective of non military intervention in African and a basic search for a balanced allocation and distribution of US aid infrastructure development and other
resources to improve the quality of life that reflects our thinking political status and contribution in this country.

It should be our position that there exists no contradiction for our representative to have as priorities the economic domestic crisis in the US as well as the oversight for African foreign policy, in fact oversight for the Diaspora on the international agenda. In this new global reality it’s both political and economically prudent that there are other ethnic groups who represent these foreign agenda more than their domestic constituency.

During this meltdown the Israel lobby continues to assure millions of dollars a day goes to support the state of Israel. They see no space between the two nor should we with our political power comes responsibility.

The stated objective for Africom, “will coordinate all US military activity across Africa and is responsible for military relations with 53 African countries excluding Egypt.” I guess one wonders why? Upon critical review one understands there is no way central command which cover the Middle East, Central Asia that based in Florida is not monitored by Israel lobby in America, their congressional representative will not allow any decisions in subcommittees that are not in line with Israel interest. No sanctions military intervention, military training or economic aid in the middle east. No enemy of Israel real or perceived will be allowed to get a foothold to alter their design direction in the House of Representatives. My remarks are not intended to address Zionism rather a critical look at the proper use of electoral power that impacts on foreign policy. A strategy that we must now have to engage in as a mature political forces like the Cuban of Florida, and the Irish, “A change we can believe in” for real. There already existing skepticism about this mission in Africa folks in the house of Representative believe there is a hidden agenda to secure oil fight terrorist out flank China and to continue perpetual war in support of the military industrial complex who lobby for these misadventures. The continued use of Al-Qaeda as the bogieman cannot be the straw horse for intervention in Africa just because someone says Allah Akbar. That policy had Africom military operations moving for regions change in Somalia’s Islamic government, the government that had initially been responsible for halting piracy from 2005 to 2006. The end result was the emergence of not respected dysfunctional government, which resurrected the rise of piracy.

The international community has agreed that the dysfunctional government can’t allow piracy to exist off the coast of Aden, effecting the worldwide shipping and economy without military consequence.

Keeping in mind that same International maritime company took advantage of a government and people unpunished for what became the birth of piracy. The surge of piracy has been blamed on Somalian National Volunteer Coast Guard, one of the first pirate groups. It was formed by a group of fisherman who used small guns broken speed boats in an effort to protect their coast line by chasing away vessel they believed were illegally fishing and dumping waste in Somalia’s waters, killing and drying up fish and food supply a rag tag group of young men doing their patriotic duty. The appalling living conditions drive the desperate (rational or not) young Somali to risk their lives and freedom. In which 80% of the population is still living in hell with an ocean view. Similar scenario repeated in many places around the world for those of the Diaspora. Is this a condition of manipulation or design so as not to allow the Somali to realize an economic development possibility by the development of a thriving seaport of Adrian? The piracy issue in Somalia is a military issue because its in need of a realistic economic development plan with dignity.

It should be noted that Rep. Donald Payne was discouraged by the US State Department from going to Mogadishu during the intense period of the Mersek Alabama ship hijacking. In search for a African union and the new Somalian government involvement in the situation. Courageously Rep. Payne succeeds the protection and assurance of the African Union and a general of a African nation to proceed. It was reported that upon departure some form of rocket attacked representative Payne’s plane. This being a not too subtle reminder from the State Department for the CBC to stay out of the National Intelligence Assessment Committee backyard. If we recall it was the same attitude that had many of our people believe that Rep. Cynthia McKinney was not working in our best interest, similar that was attempted against Rep Maxine Waters and Randall Robinson intervening to prevent the assassinations of the then President of Haiti President Aristide. Dialogue with the CBC and general William Ward should be the oversight process to determine his understanding of his mission (who happens to be black) and impress upon him our concerns by what the 21st century strategic engagement under the Barack Obama era. That should be distinguished from the Bush administration. The 300-pound gorillas in the debate are these; Does the International criminal court in The Hague only indict African bad actors? Do we see a role for US military in Dafur, the Congo, Uganda, should military aid be a condition for humanitarian support.

Many of these questions and more should be must be debated factually in our Harlem great debate and all over the country in workshops that internationalize the new political involvement. A coalition of concern organizations who are task motivated for research preparation lobbying exposure and monitoring of Africom. This must be a fact driven process with mobilization with clear focus to accomplish political pressure.

Our overriding objective within the context of this historical political period is to not allow Africom to become an apparatus of 21st century US imperialism in Africa under leadership of President Barack Obama.

  1. It’s important that this task favor young people leadership (not exclusively).
  2. That they learn the lesson of Africa colonization and US imperialism so they know it when they see it. The study of Randall Robinson work is instructive as well as Dambisa Mayo’s book, Dead Aid.
  3. That critical analysis of the various competing political conflicts be reviewed.
  4. Young activists who participated in the Obama campaign and local election with candidate with a working understanding of civil involvement.
  5. Technical geek college students for investigative journalism development of position paper research of alternative press “The New African”.
  6. Hip Hop community activist are most internally aware of the geo-political theatre and generally have international contact perspective.
  7. The young promising elected official who won with the aid of activist young people in local districts should use Cynthia McKinney, Maxine Waters, Rep. Donald Payne and Barbara Lee as mentor and research who in the Senate has our perspective.
  8. As our coalition matures and become predictable we should include other human rights coalitions.
  9. Complicated as the challenges represent in light of the uneven development of the emerging African Nation states NAPIL objective is to formulate an idea that encompasses the totality of the direction guide by principle and policy address a Pan African responsibility within the US legislature format, assisting Africa and the Diaspora into the 21st Century at the pace of the other continents. There are many very important developmental steps taken by a number of nations in Africa models for investments and inventions to improve the quality of life in Ghana, Botswana etc., which we should promote, and support.

Aim high and go all out!

In Honor of Dr. James C. McIntosh’s Work for the Dignity of African People (2008)

dr_mcintoshThe Family and Friends of Dr. Mutulu Shakur presents the 2008 Health Activist Award.

Statement by Dr. Mutulu Shakur:

This year, we join the list of many organizations that have recognized the exceptional leadership and contributions of Dr. James C. McIntosh. It is our privilege to bestow upon this multi-level professional his rightful dues.

More importantly, in this election year wherein the major parties there exist the intentional and subliminal objective to require our people to be dismissive of our people’s determination of priorities and concern rendering those issues subservient to the dominant and powerful cultural group. In order to be a part of this period of hope and change, this ‘yes we can’ that has not embraced our unique reality, Dr. James C McIntosh’s life work is a shining light.

A key structure in the vanguard that undermines our priorities is the media. This corporate media has made it their objective to cast our flavor as extreme. The best example demonstrated in the primary and the general election campaign irrespective or our skepticism. This is in fact historical in its normicism. The presumed democratic candidate being an “African American” which is seen as the last stop of this country’s rectification for the 400 years which included brutal slavery, hangings, terror, mental disorder, destruction of the family unit, highlights the effective manipulation of the psyche of our people by the corporate media. This undermines the lack of a defined identity in practice by the willingness to demonize our own historical image such as our liberation theology and our culture to be included or to see our “representative” (which seems like an oxymoron) abandon our world vision and historical analysis to get elected – something other candidates would not to. Although we realize a strategic value tactically.

Dr. James C. McIntosh’s leadership in CEMOTAP (The Committee to Eliminate Media Offensive to African People) places him in the right place at the right time for our people. This might become the most defining priorities of his many accomplishments, a task we highlight to add forces of support.

The rightful euphoria that our people feel as well as he artificial media manipulation of our emotion as we observe in acupuncture is diagnosis as false qi – a condition that requires of our people the exercise of the process of critical thinking. CEMOTAP stands as that structure. Dr. McIntosh’s Fanonism background will help to guide such a process. (I can hear you Brother, it is time for others to take over). I use your life and accomplishments to help make the point and emphasize:

The process of critical thinking (juxtapose to argument) can become a practice of our people, a subculture like spoken word, rap, etc. It has been done in other cultures, China, Cuba, Africa. A practice we seem to have failed to apply to the current period, or we are standing in moot. So how it became intellectually cute or in vogue that being objective is somehow an indicator of political astuteness at the cost of our concerns. While the Jewish, Latin, Catholic, hard-working White man, and soccer moms continue to operate on a subjective format especially during electoral periods.

My friends, we need CEMOTAP, a proactive gatekeeper to filter out the mind control effort by the media which creatively and professionally instills the process of critical thinking to help dictate our people’s lives …which is resulting in the dumbing down of our analytical ability resulting in neurotic response to matter that helps to create the cumulative response that speaks not to our own moral and political compass but that rejects defining our destiny and what we will be required to leave to our next generation/

For me, being in prison as a political prisoner for almost a quarter of a century it’s hard from the point to determine if we’ve maximized an effective use in the development of conceptualization and distribution of information with the use of the internet. It will be our most reliable alternative media.

With an alternative media, we must be proactive formulating the spiritual, mental and physical response to this economic era that will be unparalleled as it affects our people and the already economic under-developed. Dr. McIntosh and his comrades for it right; they’re at the forefront. We should be thinking and refining the comprehensive use while developing second and third line leadership with models to emulate to help guide this grassroots application.

Our people and the poor are no strangers to hardship. We should approach the economic forecast with our eyes wide open. In this election, our enthusiasm has already shown we are willing to submerge our interest and culture to empower others who intern abuse of our own that is equivalent to rape or domestic violence at best. Astride said, “ They can’t take your dignity, but you can give it to them.” We have in the hopes that they will play fair? Ordinary intuition and moral intuition must capitulate before the clear forces of reason. Hope has its place, but a plan is nothing like it.

This is exemplified by the fact that unlike other ethnic and cultural religion lobby’s we have no foreign policy prerequisite to place on those who want our vote. If they don’t call us nigger they are alright with us, but its more to it. The last foreign policy we as a mass came together for was the end to South African apartheid and the freeing of political prisons and prisoners of war in Azania. Not since have we put demands on a politician as it concerns trade, economic sanctions as a prerequisite for our vote. The South African issue was a human rights violation and economic empowerment by the share of the national resources. We took our eye off the ball and made it a demand for personality cult; that’s why we don’t understand if President Robert Mugabe is trying to return the fruit of the struggle back to the people or is he trying to destroy the victory. It was the land and natural resources, when hungry families of other African nations can be beaten and murdered in South Africa for the depth of poverty, we have a lot of issues in foreign policy to address the concerns of our diaspora.

Senator Obama has made campaign promises to AJPAC, the American Israel lobby. With passion, he’s promised them disputed land, support to military hegemony in the Middle East, and accepted their development of nuclear weapons, ISO bomb to be exact. This is one of the last nations to resolve that South Africa was in violation of human rights.

He also made commitments to slow down lifting the embargo against Cuba until Cuba releases the so-called political prisoners. This same Cuba that has always on an international level raised the issue of New Afrikan people in the United States has shown in practice by being one of the first nations to volunteer help for our people after Katrina who’ve for over 40 years given sanctuary to our political exiles. I can go on, but I’m also quite aware that Obama’s running for President of the United States and its not lost on us behind the wall that any progress change here is a good thing. Its that this process must run its course.

In light of all those factors, we must still exercise the process of critical thinking. We must join Dr. McIntosh to help shape the conceptual thinking and actions that advance our issues and concerns for the 21st century. In light of the anticipated challenges, the struggle must promote this the period a the era of service. The concept of grassroots service should not be an afterthought. Instead, we must use it to reshape the analyst that through time services that one will become successful as opposed to after becoming successful then one decides to give back. Service should be the base of our community, national and international agenda.

This emphasis on services should be structured so that it’s a proactive anticipation of how the emerging economic and political crisis evolved in that many will become dissipated. If the prospect of change is not realized, the intervention into the mental and spiritual breakdown, a very fertile ground for an activist psychiatrist Fanon. Dr. McIntosh can give guidance to a service structure program to anticipate mental health needs of a culture under attack through regentrification, political debasement, as well as the respect for the sacrifice of a people by their suffering and resistance has forged possibly for other people and cultures, like no other group in this country.

We must develop a trifecta of talking points on an international, national and local level. Even with the limited resources, we must address all these levels because it demonstrates the maturity of a people in the world like other subgroups in this country exercise. Our community and national human resources must be recruited into the period of service as a collective response. The consultation with Dr. McIntosh is the example that can provide applicable example.

The celebration of service from the bottom up on the lateral level will define ability to generate this generation’s creative solution and intervention on a very fundamental level which is that of our community.

To address food prices and honor family budgets more food coops, diet education, community gardens, networking for wholesale and soup kitchens that rather than create any shame celebrate the collective use as a part of the community solution.

The introduction of natural healing storefronts, walk-in health care interventions, a step before the emergency room, chronic care and pre-emptive crisis care services.

Collective community exercise, group walking, community dancing groups, senior and youth group sports, handball, bicycle groups, yes many of the above we do. By creating a feeling of service to each other will have a tremendous effect on our psyche while others are trying to undermine our people. We must have concrete programs for folks to be involved. I remember well the Brothers selling us fish in the 60’s and 70’s, this interaction with family in the breakfast program, the community homework center we had, the role of the afternoon center in our hood. It kept us together. We must share this experience with the emerging community leaders.

Please remember our obligation to our political prisoners and prisoners of war of the Black Liberation struggle. To be objectively honest and critical in our thinking we have not done for our freedom fighters what we have championed for others or how other groups have done for freedom fighters. The United States has more people in prison than any nation in the world and we are disproportionately the majority. The spirit of service must also extend to base prison programs. It’s a national issue and reflective of the oppression we face. Of course, it goes without saying, we must be accountable for failure of a code of conduct that allows for the horizontal aggression we afflict on each other.

We listen to politicians frame all the type of moral rationale to free political prisoners all over the world, and forget that it was the sacrifice of our political prisoners and prisoners of war that help t bring them to the status they enjoy. Affirmative action exists without the value and principle context that allows underserving opportunist bourgeoisie to benefit from other sacrifices while they/not all betray our values and responsibility to our evolved culture. One way to present this phenomena is a “Truth and Reconciliation” tribunal on the low-intensity warfare wages by J.E> Hoover against the Black Liberation Movement. This will force the participation of politicians, historians and liberation fighters. We must in that context address the now recognized post-traumatic stress effect on so many of our people who’ve experienced unthinkable abuse during the course of our struggle. Like how is being understood about soldiers returning from armed warfare in Iraq. The Truth and Reconciliation tribunal will help to bring a proactive understanding of all this abut. How can we understand the value of Dr. McIntosh’s leadership in all of the above. He’s learned his truth from it.

On the International level, we must make AIDS, hunger, famine and rape as a tool of war apart from our service apparent. It must be our community that helps to promote bicycles to rural communities in Africa who can’t get their AIDS cocktails. We can collect to get peanut butter and honey or those children suffering from malnutrition.

We are expecting to build a relationship to Acupuncturist without Borders. Our force must get non-governmental organizations for relief around the world. We must become proactive “No more Katrina” without a measurable response from our network collective nationally. Our front of crisis: we honor Dr. J. McIntosh because his work highlights what is possible. For that, we honor him and his example.

A historical perspective means nothing in the eye of the storm. Great ideas, that were concepts adopted but never realized because the people neglected to carry them out and didn’t have the focus to work together.

It is said that ‘the truth is a bully we all pretend to like.’ With respect to all that I said, this much too long message I’m very optimistic. Optimism is the first cousin of love.

Much respect,

Stiff Resistance,

Long live the example of Dr. James McIntosh,

Dr. Mutulu Shakur

Dr. Mutulu Shakur’s 2008 Legal Update

RE: Interim Parole Hearing – December 2007

The Interim Parole Hearing for Dr. Shakur was held on December 11, 2007 at USP-Florence ADMAX. Mutulu and I thank each of you for your letters, prayers and support. Below is my report of the Hearing.

[History of the Case]

Federal law provides, in relevant part, that a federal inmate who is eligible for parole may be released on parole after completion of one-third of his prison term or after 10 years of any sentence over 30 years. Dr. Shakur was eligible for parole in 1996. However, his efforts to have a parole hearing in 1996 were blocked by various forces.

In 2002, an Initial Parole Hearing was finally convened. The Parole Commission denied parole to Dr. Shakur and ordered a 15 year reconsideration date. Therefore, Dr. Shakur is not eligible for parole reconsideration until 2017. We have always maintained that because of the 6 year delay, Dr. Shakur should be eligible for parole in 2011.

In 2004, we filed a Petition of Writ of Habeas Corpus in the United States District Court for the Northern District of Georgia to address, inter alia, the six year delay in having a parole hearing (from 1996 to 2002). Despite our legal battles which ultimately took us to the United States Supreme Court, the highest court declined to hear our case in 2006.
Even though Dr. Shakur was given a 15 year “hit” in 2002, federal law provides Interim Parole Hearings every 2 years. In 2005, after the Interim Parole Hearing, the Parole Commission refused to acknowledge the 6 year delay, and maintained that Dr. Shakur would not be eligible again for parole until 2017.

[2007 Interim Parole Hearing]

On December 11, 2007,the Interim Parole Hearing was held at the country’s most isolated dungeon, USP-Florence, or “Supermax,” as it is commonly referred to, located in the mountains of Florence, Colorado. There is absolutely no human contact or interaction. In fact, our Hearing was held inside of an attorney’s booth; Dr. Shakur was separated by glass and handcuffed.

The Hearing Officer began by reciting the standard rules of Interim Parole Hearings: To determine whether there have been any rule changes and to review any and all “positive and negative adjustments” since the 2005 Interim Parole Hearing.

Ironically, the Hearing Officer commented that the recent allegations that are documented in the two disciplinary reports that Dr. Shakur received which resulted in his transfer to the Supermax facility were “minor infractions” in his opinion. He further stated that Dr. Shakur’s transfer to Supermax was also “not significant” and the fact that we were convened inside of the Supermax facility was not relevant to his decision.

We argued again for the record that the 6-year delay from 1996 to 2002 was unlawful and that Dr. Shakur should have a parole reconsideration date of 2011, rather than 2017. The Hearing Officer stated that he was bound by the previous decision of the Parole Commission.

We also argued that the recent allegations contained in the recent disciplinary reports were false and that we were actively appealing each allegation through all available administrative channels. We also maintained that the transfer to Supermax was unjustified.

We raised each of the positive contributions made by Dr. Shakur at USP-Atlanta and USP-Coleman, highlighting his continuous service to rebuilding men. We also covered his detailed plans for release and reentry into society.

[Conclusion]

While the Hearing Officer appeared attentive and impressed by our presentation, Interim Parole Hearings generally serve to review an inmate’s file and to determine whether there is enough evidence to modify the 15 year “hit.” The Hearing Officer noted that while he found no cause to change the previous decision, the final decision, referred to as a Notice of Action, will be released in approximately 30 days. We will appeal any adverse decision.
I have been proud to serve as Dr. Shakur’s attorney over the years despite the number of legal battlefields we have encountered. I encourage each of you to continue to support him in the midst of such times as these. Every single letter counts; I was proud to introduce over 20 letters from various supporters throughout the country and from all walks of life to the Hearing Officer. They will be a part of his file in Washington, D.C.

Dr. Shakur extends his gratitude and love to each one of you. Dr. Shakur remains a bulwark of strength and a never-ending diplomat for peace.

ABOUT THE CASE

Dr. Shakur was sentenced in 1988 on charges of Conspiracy to aid bank expropriation as well as under the U. S. conspiracy laws known as “Racketeer Influenced and Corrupt Organization” or ‘RICO’ laws (8 counts). The U.S. government alleged that Mutulu’s political associates constituted a racketeering enterprise. He was also charged with aiding in the escape of Assata Shakur (Joanne Chesimard). Prosecutors failed to provide key evidence such as electronic telephone interceptions, fingerprints, hair, or eyewitness identification of Mutulu at any crime scene by any third party, etc.

His efforts in the black community have been essential and liberating. Dr. Mutulu Shakur’s contributions include but are not limited to:
• Employment at the Lincoln Detoxification Community (addiction treatment) Program as acupuncturist, counselor, and political education instructor.
• Managing a detoxification program recognized as the largest and most effective of its kind by the National Institute of Drug Abuse, National Acupuncture Research Society and the World Academic Society of Acupuncture.
• Treating thousands of poor and elderly patients who would otherwise have no access to acupuncture treatment.
• Developing the anti-drug program for the Charles Cobb Commission for Racial Justice for the National Council of Churches.
• Dedicating his life and struggle against the political imprisonment of Black Political Activists.

Please take the time to recognize a leader in the community and help fight for his freedom. Address the letters to:

Dr. Mutulu Shakur’s September 2007 Legal Update

Brothers and Sisters:

Mutulu was transferred out of Coleman II Federal Prison in Florida on March 15, 2007:
(1) to sabotage and derail a parole hearing that had been scheduled for May, and
(2) to end the positive educational and cultural programming activities that he has spearheaded since his incarceration.

The Moves

Since March 15, 2007 (and as of this writing 9/07) Mutulu has been moved four times:

  • 3/07 to Pollock, Louisiana
  • 4/07 to Atlanta, GA
  • 5/07 to Oklahoma City, OK
  • 6/07 to Florence, CO (a super maximum-security facility)

The Pretext

The stated purpose of the investigation and interrogation by the Federal Bureau of Prisons (FBOP) was to:

  • determine what Mutulu knew of how a film clip of a workshop held at the July 29, 2006 ‘Hip-Hop Summit’ at Coleman got on MySpace.com and how a DVD of the ‘Hip-Hop Summit’ was being sold on the street in Atlanta.
  • that Mutulu made a video for personal gain.
  • that he was running a business while incarcerated, namely the Dare To Struggle website.

Outcome of Investigation

After all the smoke cleared the final write up had to do with re-issue of the Dare To Struggle CD (a not-for-profit project from the start), which was actually done while Mutulu was in Atlanta, and an alleged coded phone conversation with a supporter while at Pollock. There was nothing in the final write up about videos. And there was nothing about his conduct at Coleman.

Political Purges and Retaliation Within the Prison

FCC Coleman is the largest prison complex in the United States with 8,000 prisoners in five facilities; two maximum, a medium, and low security male facilities and a women’s camp. Carlisle Holder, The warden of the maximum security prison where Dr. Shakur was incarcerated, worked with him and other socially conscious inmates to develop educational and cultural programs. This approach has been effective in terms of rehabilitation and maintaining peace. USP II, managed by Warden Holder, has experienced little violence while USP I, the other maximum security prison in the Coleman Complex, remains under lock down with constant violence, deaths and stabbings.

Since March 2007 Bureau of Prisons officials have interrogated, harassed, demoted, and purged Warden Holder and members of his staff. In addition prisoners who worked with Mutulu have been transferred to other facilities. This purge and retaliation is motivated by Justice Department and FBOP opposition to educational and cultural programs that have a life changing impact on the transformation of dozens of men, particularly youth from a criminal mentality to liberation consciousness. Obviously constant violence and hostility is preferred to rehabilitation and peace. Cultural and educational programming has been suspended at the facility and can only be approved from the FBOP regional office. The only programming allowed is religious programming.

Parole

We believe the Justice Department and the Federal Bureau of Prisons were concerned that Mutulu would receive support from Warden Holder and other prison staff for his parole application. In February 2007 prior to the move, Mutulu’s unit managers had made a recommendation for custody decrease which would have made him eligible for transfer to a medium security facility. These factors had the potential of resulting in a favorable recommendation by the hearing officer. While the BOP has ignored recommendations from its own hearing officers in the past with regard to Mutulu it still might be embarrassing to have another positive recommendation documented. And so, they fabricated charges to get him transferred and the prison purged of officials who supported his work.

Mutulu decided not to go for a hearing in May. As a result of the moves he was separated from his possessions and files and would not have been able to prepare adequately for a parole hearing. We expect a hearing in December.

We want to assure you that we have kept any support letters sent in anticipation of the June hearing and those will be presented in December.

Letters supporting Dr. Shakur’s parole might want to take into account his history of service to the community including:

  • Employment at the Lincoln Detoxification Community (addiction treatment) Program as a political education instructor. His role evolved to include counseling and treatment of withdrawal symptoms with acupuncture.

Since he has been incarcerated:

  • Dr. Shakur has worked to promote education among other inmates and has participated in efforts to promote unity between prisoners from different regions, religious, ethnic and cultural affiliations in institutions where he was imprisoned.
  • At each institution where Dr. Shakur has been incarcerated he has worked with other inmates, staff, and community artists, activists, and intellectuals to create educational and cultural programs as a vehicle to encourage positive development for the incarcerated, particularly Black and Latino youth. If you participated in these programs, please speak about your experiences and observations.
  • During his incarceration he has sought peaceful means to resolve conflict.
  • Based upon the above points indicate he will be a productive and positive influence in any community where he resides. Also, the charges for which he was convicted were politically motivated and related to a political climate in which the aim was to eliminate racial discrimination and injustice. Dr. Shakur has advocated efforts to bring about reconciliation from the conflict of that period. Keep in mind we are not trying to convert the Federal Parole Board to a particular ideology or campaign, but to secure freedom from incarceration for Dr. Shakur.

In the recent words of Dr. Mutulu Shakur, “When we stop and don’t move and become paralyzed by the present, we don’t deserve the future.”
